How to Choose Luxury Bath Towels (Without Getting Talked Into the Wrong Ones)
Walk into any homewares store and you'll find towels described as luxury. Soft. Premium. Hotel-quality. The words are everywhere, and they mean almost nothing without context. A $25 towel and a $95 towel can sit on the same shelf with the same marketing language, and telling them apart takes more than a quick feel through the packaging.
The good news is that once you know what to look for, choosing a genuinely luxury bath towel becomes straightforward. Here's what actually matters.
Start With the Material
Everything else comes second to fibre quality. The material determines how the towel feels, how long it lasts, and whether it improves or deteriorates over time.
Turkish cotton is widely considered the gold standard for luxury bath towels. Grown in Turkey's Aegean region, it has an unusually long staple length — meaning the individual fibres are longer than standard cotton. Longer fibres create a smoother yarn, a softer surface, and a towel that holds together beautifully through years of washing. Turkish cotton towels also dry faster than most alternatives, which matters for everyday practicality.
Egyptian cotton is another premium option with a similar long-staple structure. It tends to produce a slightly heavier, more plush towel than Turkish cotton. Quality Egyptian cotton is genuinely excellent, though it's worth knowing that a lot of towels sold as "Egyptian cotton" contain very little of the actual fibre — independent testing has found widespread mislabelling in the category.
Bamboo is soft and naturally antibacterial, which makes it appealing for sensitive skin. It's a reasonable option but generally less durable than cotton and can lose its softness faster with repeated washing.
Standard cotton (terry) is fine for everyday use but rarely qualifies as luxury in any meaningful sense. The short-staple fibres that make up most terry towels create a product that starts soft and gets rougher over time.
If a towel doesn't tell you clearly what type of cotton it's made from, that's usually a sign the fibre quality isn't something worth shouting about.
Understand GSM
GSM stands for grams per square metre. It's the weight of the fabric, and it's often used as a shorthand for quality — but it's more nuanced than that.
Here's what different GSM ranges actually mean:
300 to 400 GSM is lightweight and fast-drying. This is the range most Turkish cotton towels sit in. They feel lighter than hotel towels but are highly absorbent and dry in a fraction of the time.
400 to 600 GSM is the everyday bathroom sweet spot. Absorbent, reasonably quick to dry, and substantial enough to feel considered.
600 to 900 GSM is the thick, heavy hotel-style towel. Feels incredibly plush straight out of the dryer but takes a long time to dry between uses, which can become a hygiene issue in a regularly used bathroom.
The important thing to understand is that a higher GSM doesn't automatically mean a better towel. A 400 GSM Turkish cotton towel will outperform a 700 GSM standard cotton towel on softness, durability and drying speed. The fibre quality matters more than the weight.
Size: Bath Towel vs Bath Sheet
Standard bath towels measure approximately 70cm x 140cm. Bath sheets are larger, typically around 90cm x 180cm. Miss April's bath towels are cut at the bath sheet size, which means you get full coverage without needing to buy up to a larger size.
If you're shopping elsewhere, check the dimensions before buying. A "bath towel" that measures 65cm x 130cm is noticeably smaller in use than one at 90cm x 180cm, even if they're sold at similar price points.
Look for Certifications
Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification means the yarn and fabric have been independently tested and verified to be free from harmful substances. It's a meaningful quality signal, not just a marketing badge. For a product that goes on your skin every day, it's worth looking for.
Some towels also carry GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certification, which covers the organic credentials of the cotton from farm to finished product. Less common but worth noting if sustainability is a priority for you.
Red Flags to Watch For
A few things worth being cautious about when shopping for luxury bath towels:
Fabric softener in the manufacturing process. Many towels are treated with softeners before sale to make them feel luxurious in the packet. This wears off quickly and can actually reduce absorbency in the short term. A towel that needs chemical assistance to feel soft isn't relying on fibre quality.
Polyester blends. Some towels blend cotton with polyester to reduce cost. Polyester doesn't absorb moisture the way cotton does and tends to pill over time. Check the fabric composition carefully.
Vague origin labelling. "Inspired by Turkish traditions" or "hammam style" is not the same as being woven in Turkey from Turkish cotton. If a brand is genuinely using high-quality Turkish cotton, they'll say so directly.
Very low prices. Genuine quality Turkish cotton towels have a cost of production that sets a floor on the price. If something is being sold as luxury Turkish cotton at $15, one of those claims isn't true.
What Luxury Actually Feels Like in Practice
The test of a truly luxury bath towel isn't how it feels on day one. It's how it feels after fifty washes. Does it still absorb well? Is it still soft? Has the colour held? Does it smell fresh after a day on the rail?
A towel that passes those tests is genuinely luxury, regardless of what the label says. One that doesn't is just well-packaged.
